Advent Vespers

In celebration of our long and fruitful relationship with Monastery of the Holy Cross, Chorale returns this fall to share our singing with the Benedictine monks in a service of Advent Vespers. Experience the timeless texts of this season of waiting and anticipation through plainchant, hymns, and motets, in the monastery chapel’s otherworldly acoustics. In the midst of what is often a stressful, rushed season, this service offers an island of quiet and peace, and an opportunity to meditate on the deeper meaning of the season.

Chicago Chorale and David JOnies, Organ

Our winter concert will return to the more familiar sounds of the English cathedral tradition.  Works will include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ magisterial Mass in G minor, one of the most important major choral works of the twentieth century, and two works accompanied by organ: Like as the Hart, by Herbert Howells, and Rejoice in the Lamb, by Benjamin Britten. Our guest organist will be David Jonies, Director of Music and Organist of Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral. Audience members will remember David’s virtuosic playing when Chorale presented the Duruflé Requiem at St. Thomas the Apostle several years ago, and won’t want to miss hearing him in this equally brilliant work.

The Four B’s: Bach, Bruckner, Brahms, and Bridges

In June, Chorale will present our regular pianist, Kit Bridges, in Johannes BrahmsFour Quartets, Opus 92, for choir and piano, and in the final movement of the Neue Liebeslieder, “Nun, ihr Musen, genug!” This will be a rare treat for our audiences, who experience the results of Kit's musical leadership and profound musicality through our customary a cappella performances, but rarely actually hear him perform!  The program will also include a set of motets by Anton Bruckner, and open with three motets by J.S. Bach: Ich lasse dich nicht, Komm, Jesu, komm, and Fürchte dich nicht, ich bin bei dir. A veritable feast of the highest and best of Western European music.
